Here at our elfish little household, we tend to stick with one theme for a few years. We’ve done all gold; medieval musical instruments (yes, really); a Victorian Christmas; Harry Potter…and then our comfortable fallback, the mix-and-match-from-the-garage.

But this year, a few themes kept coming up on my many searches into all things Christmas. And I discovered some really interesting trends — and some surprising ones.

The following ideas come from research across a variety of channels including decor magazines, trending keyword searches, Reuters reports on trends from designers, and of course, Pinterest, Instagram and other social media platforms.

Want to get in on trendy 2024 Christmas decor for your own cozy cottage? Here’s what you need to know.

Jewel Tones

The most searched, and most prominent, trend I came across was Christmas decor that wasn’t the standard red and green. Jewel tones in particular are hot for frosty Christmas 2024. Think sapphire blue, emerald green, or ruby red. Mix in with a metal so your jewel tones pop.

Christmas Tree Collars

YES please! It’s not that I don’t love a blanket-wrapped trunk a la A Charlie Brown Christmas. But these cool Christmas tree collars just kick the whole presentation up a notch. If you have a natural tree, get a collar that opens easily in the back so you can water the base.

Vintage Christmas Ornaments

Vintage is back, helped by a strong nostalgic feeling this year that you may have noticed (I have). Vintage Christmas ornaments and handmade decorations all bring us back to simpler times. “Vintage” means the time period you want to mean, whether that’s Dickens-esque Victorian, 1950s red-cheeked cheer or a 1970s blow mold Santa Claus, snowman and reindeer.

Mixed Metals

Rather than choosing all silver or all gold, it’s very on-trend this year to mix your metals. Mix things up on the tree, in tinsel colors, and for added touches on garland.

Following along the nostalgic/vintage trend comes a HUGE return to DIY this Christmas. But it’s not just popsicle sticks and glue that doesn’t. Check out Pinterest and TikTok for some very cool, easy and seriously satisfying Christmas decor tutorials (like the clock above, or the gingerbread house quickie tutorial below from Pinterest).
